Back in the studio, rolling out new pieces! Doobie was actually finished in December, but had to wait for 2012 for his official showing.

I am thinking about entering him in the SAMA

It's been a tough week. After a not-too serious fall on Sunday, I am nevertheless moving slowly in my last minute preparations for the St. James Court Art Fair this weekend. My scraped up face (yes, I face-planed across that mulch and dirt with great impact!) looks worse than it feels, but sore muscles and bruises have kept me in bed with ice packs.
I can hardly wait to greet 200,000 visitors to the show this weekend looking like a battered babe, but I will be there with some new pieces providing nothing happens between here and Louisville!

Yes, the U Hauls are circling and thousands of shower curtains, desk lamps and mini refrigerators line the shelves of Target. Landlords have been hauling out the old and installing the new.
Bloomington residents know this signals the start of the new school year. The on-going cycle of young, eager-to-learn, and ready-to-party students return to our bucolic B-ton.

This year, some lucky students will be signing a lease to live in "CandyLand", one of Bloomington's most colorful rentals owned by an equally colorful and cool landlord!

He can be seen here approving the installation of his new "CandyLand" mosaic.

A recent article in Eco-Artwear Notes featuring our recycled pieces reminded me that I need to start making mailboxes again.

With the advent of email and texting in addition to postal rate hikes and less "snail mail", I was questioning if we even need mailboxes anymore.

But after some thought on the matter, I realize we do. Ever since I was a kid the sound of the postman coming up to the door meant the possibility of something just "for me".

As a resident of a neighborhood with older homes, we have the luxury of a mailbox mounted on our porch. I know the sound of the lid being closed, signaling that the postman "cometh" and among the (albeit fewer) pieces of junk mail, bills and pizza coupons there may be some correspondence of the old fashioned personal kind.

So, I am going to re-visit my stash of "orphan mailboxes" I have acquired over the years and start tiling! Maybe the "build it, they will come" idea will work. A beautiful mosaic mailbox with a real handwritten letter tucked inside waiting for the recipient. Nothing better!

Here it is 4 days before the Krasl Art Fair. The studio looks like a disaster zone, partially finished pieces cover the work tables, the floor is crunchy with glass and packing material sits in "stand by" mode. What happened to June? Why will I never be ready for the next show?
We always look forward to Krasl. A beautiful show in Saint Joseph, MI, on the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. This year they celebrate their 50th anniversary. What once started as a "clothesline" art fair in 1962 has now turned into one of the nicest, juried art fairs in the midwest. I'm always excited when I get my "acceptance", but never seem to have enough time to finish all the work I want to share with the patrons. Although, Bud (packer-boy) will disagree with me when it comes time to load all the new work in the van!

So, back to the studio to put the finishing touches on the new pieces. 'Hope you will stop by this weekend, July 9 10 a.m to 6 p.m. and July 10 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. We'll be in booth #181, just in front of the gardens across from the art center.

If I Only Had A Crystal Ball....

Well, it's not crystal, but our new gazing ball stand with cool blue tempered glass ball is finished and will debut at the Talbot Street Art Fair this weekend, June 11-12.
Gazing globes as we all know look fabulous in the garden. They also come with a rather fabulous legend.
A globe was said to bring happiness, good luck and prosperity to those who owned it. The globe was known to ward off evil spirits, misfortune, illness and, of all things, witches! Some say the ball should be placed near the entrance to the house so that if a witch came to your house she would not be able to get past her reflection as she cannot tear herself away from her own image. There are other accounts that say a witch cannot bear to see her own reflection so she will not come near a "witch’s ball"
A more practical use for these beauties originated in the south. Placed strategically by the path from the front gate, one could see from the veranda who was calling before the caller could see them, allowing plenty of time to prepare refreshments for their guest or to hide — whichever was fitting.
Whether you love the legend, or just the beauty of a unique piece of art in the garden, gazing balls are predictably cool!

Art Fair Season is Upon Us

Moe's Ache Studio was featured recently in an Indianapolis Star article about summer art fairs in Indiana. We are fortunate to have so many great art shows and talented artists in and around our community. It seems like almost every show I do always has a large number of Bloomington and Brown County artists represented. I don't know whether there is a "magic meridian" that runs through this area attracting them, but when artists find a creative atmosphere and a supportive audience, they stay and good art flows! You won't need to travel far this summer to enjoy their offerings. With gas at $4.07/gal this is a good thing! Check out "Summer Art Fairs: This season is a work of art" to get the "inside" scoop on the upcoming shows.
Kicking off the list is the Broad Ripple Art Fair, May 21-22. We'll be in booth #90 (in the artist field) with some brand new mosaics. 'Hope to see you there!

Awesome Artist Yard Sale May 13-14

I'm psyched! For the past two years I have had a booth at this fun event, however this year I will be attending as a shopper and helper only. I'd like to say that I created no "mistakes or seconds" this year. I did have a few "not next to perfect" mosaic creations however they were scooped up earlier this year leaving me with little art work to sell at the Awesome Artist Yard Sale. A busy show schedule has left me with little time to clean the studio, so this year I will be shopping instead of selling.
In addition to the art, "junk" and "funk" offered by the artists cleaning out their studios and closets, the sale will feature a "big tent" sale with larger items (furniture, art work, display fixtures and collectables to name a few). Lunch will be served with proceeds helping to purchase a tent for the children's activity booth at this year's Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts.
It's a fun event filled with some great bargains and unusual stuff from some of Bloomington's most unusual artists. Join us Friday and Saturday at 1114 Brooks Drive from 9 a.m- 4 p.m. You know you need some new spring "stuff"!

I apologize for this last minute post, but it's been a soggy week in the studio. As the rain just keeps on coming, we keep moving things to higher ground, and the studio gets a good "rinsing". Needless to say we've spent too much time dealing with the water leaving me little time to get the word out about our next show.

We will be back at Cherokee Triangle this weekend April 30 and May 1. And we are anticipating some nice weather along with that wonderful Louisville hospitality. So stop by and see us in booth #707 (across from the Cherokee outdoor dining area).

Speaking of outdoor dining. We will have a selection of "take out" tables perfect for the deck, patio or porch. These beautiful, one of a kind glass mosaic end tables can be easily folded and stored during the winter. Custom colors are also available!

Indiana Artisan Marketplace

Somehow I thought there would be plenty of time to finish up the new work, photograph it and get it posted to the blog well before the Indiana Artisan Marketplace.....hmmm. Not quite, but new pieces will be completed this weekend, so check back. In the meantime check out the website for the inaugural Marketplace coming up April 16 and 17th at the Expo Hall at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. 225 Indiana and Kentucky artisans will share their arts, crafts and locally produced food items (be prepared to sample lots of goodies). Discount admission coupons are available at the site as well as a list of exhibitors and their specialties. Moe's Ache Studio will be in booth #306. Look for the big blue mosaic bull dog!

After 30+ years of "exhibiting ourselves" (as my friend Beth Ann refers to it) at art shows it's hard to consider ourselves "newbies" on the show circuit. However, we are excited to be included in the Kentucky Crafted Market opening in Louisville March 19 and 20th. In it's 29th year, the market isn't a "newbie" either! Traditionally open to Kentucky artists only, this year members of the Indiana Artisan's program will be showing there for the first time. I guess we're really Indiana virgins.
We're excited and honored to be able to attend such a prestigious event.
Keeping an eye on things in our booth will be "Ruff the Red Eye Dog"

Moe's Ache Studio will be at the Garage Sale Art Fair this Saturday in Kalamazoo, MI. Artists clean out their studios and bring their seconds, weirdos and misfits all at reduced prices. I love to shop this show even more than selling my own work! Fortunately, Bud will be with me so our booth will be "manned" while I'm out scouring for new treasures (that will more than likely be included in future creations). In addition to our own "smashing" misfits, we're bringing some mosaic supplies for those artists just "breaking into" the art. See you in the 'Zoo!

Moe's Ache rolling out some new pieces for the UU show this Friday and Saturday

Moe's Ache Studio along with 30 other artists will be at the Unitarian Universalist Art Fair and Bazaar this Friday and Saturday. Known as the "UU" among artists, this is NOT your typical church bazaar.
While it does have a great book and white elephant sale, the highlight is the work of 30 artists who would not normally do a "church bazaar".

Why do so many talented artists jury to be included? Maybe it's the Friday night lasagna and wine dinner. All the shoppers seem to enjoy this one as well as the homemade soups, breads and cookies.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that it seems like the first holiday show of the season. Often chilly and blustery outside, warm smiles and holiday cheer inside.

This 52 year old event just gets better each year. Although a small show, the variety and quality of the artwork available is remarkable. If you are in the holiday shopping mood or mode, plan to attend.
No fee to get in or park! Save your $$ for art and soup!

Christmas comes early!

There is nothing more exciting for me than opening a box of mosaic tesserae. The latest shipment from Maryland Mosaics was exceptionally rewarding. Not only did I get some wonderful tiles (at special sale prices), the whole shipment came wrapped in COLORED bubble wrap! I carefully unwrapped each bundle of tiles, preserving the bubble for future use, when the light bulb bubble came on! This will be the new booth! I will make my walls, floor and pedestals for 2011 out of colored bubble! When I tire of it, or it gets "unbubbled" I will use it as packaging, but in the meantime it will be re-purposed for the display. Thank you, Maryland Mosaics! I'm am "bubbling" over with excitement! Look for the new booth at the Indiana Artisans Show in March!

New pieces for the Deja Vu show!

I love this show! It's not a huge art fair, you don't have to pay to park or get in, and if offers original, fun work from twenty three artist who creatively recycle and reinvent. Work includes collage, mosaics, assemblage, jewelry, metal sculpture, furniture, leather goods, woodworking, and fiber arts.
It's always fun to discover new uses for old "stuff". 'Hope you can join us this Saturday at the Yes Cinema in downtown Columbus, IN. The show runs from 10 a.m to 4p.m.

We're putting the finishing touches on some "upcycled" animal sculptures like "Rabbit Redux" pictured here. 'Hoping to finish a few assemblage clocks and mirrors using recycled and found objects if I can ever get off the computer, and back in the studio.

Cloudy Days Upon Us

The Cloudcrest sign is finally coming together. My first commission using Wedi, a lightweight substrate comprised of styrofoam encased in mesh and cement. This "wonderboard" enables mosaic artists to create large works while holding down the weight. Hmmm...'wish it were that easy to hold down my weight....

The hand carved trout on the sign is a piece I acquired years ago from an wood worker who gave up his day job to be a missionary in South America. I have lost contact with him, but the last I heard he was creating large scale sand sculptures on the beach in Brazil, with contributions from admirers earmarked to those in need. The fish a little hard to part with, but the fact is it works perfectly on this piece and it's keeping with our up-cycling, re-cycling mission here in the studio.

Next step is to remove all the glass pieces, and re-lay them using thinset to insure the tiles will hold during freeze/thaw cycles the sign will be subjected to outdoors.

Each year the Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts invites their members to submit designs for the annual festival t shirt. This year's submission by Cappi Phillips, a mixed media mosaic artist, is actually a collaborative effort.
In keeping with current recycling trends, the winner is actually an "upcycled" version of a shirt originally designed in the 80's by local clay artist, Nell Devitt. With the help of graphic designer, Michael Redman, the 2010 Fourth Street shirt comes to life with festive colors and an updated look.
Shirts are available now at Bloomingfoods,The Venue and By Hand Gallery for $15.
Patrons can also purchase shirts at the Fourth Street Festival information booth located at Dunn and Fourth during the show September 4-5.

Life as we used to know it

A great week is wrapping up, and it has been a blast from the past. I had an opportunity to see a friend's new home in Terre Haute, Indiana. It is a mid century ranch in pristine condition with most of the wonderful 50's features still in the home. As we travelled the back roads, through lush corn fields, past barns and buildings from another era, we discovered the Glory Days Restaurant in Clay City, Indiana, the "Mayberry of the Midwest". Hey, that's their slogan, not mine. Clay City has a population of a little over a thousand, a great pottery that has been in business for 125 years, and Glory Days, a diner with some great food and even better Hoosier hospitality!
Speaking of hospitality, here's a pic of the the great guy who actually pumped our gas, cleaned the windshield and even offered to check the oil, all with a big smile and some Hoosier humor thrown in! Now that's a blast from the past!

We're not bluffing! We are returning to one of our favorite shows in one of the nicest settings.
Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff located in St. Joe, Michigan has everything an art lover would want. It's Talbot Street Time!

I almost hate to admit this, but I think I did my first Talbot Street show 30 years ago!!! Back in the 80's we would pack up a load of "Harries" (the whimsical clay creatures that started this whole career) in my Toyota Landcruiser and head to Indianapolis for an often rainy, but always worth-it weekend.

Eleven years ago we fired the last kiln, put away the clay and transformed the workspace into a glass/mosaic studio. While our work has changed, our love of Talbot Street still remains.

We've met thousands of loyal patrons and artists, and always look forward to reconnecting with them at the show. We hope to see you this weekend in Indianapolis at the 55th Annual Talbot Street Art Fair . Look for us in booth #248 (across from the former Heron School). As usual, we have unusual, wild and wacky work!

It's almost over! What a cold, long month it's been. I've spent more time in the kitchen than in the studio. A very rare occurrence in this household, but it's been a time for making chicken soup, meatloaves, hot mochas and other comfort foods.

Have you seen these Missing Mosaic Panels?

On Wednesday, December 9th (a cold, windy, snowy night) someone took two mosaic panels from our yard and porch.

The Garbage' Mural (approx. 4.5' tall x 3' wide), my first attempt at an outdoor piece, had successfully hidden our garbage cans from view for almost 11 years. I guess I should be flattered that someone wanted it enough to steal it, but it is a treasured "friend" that will be missed by our family, visitors and neighbors.

The hanging piece (above) was done by an elderly man I met during a downtown Chicago art fair when I was first starting out in mosaics. Seymour Adelman approached my booth, shared a small tattered picture of his recent mosaic installation, (Dr. Martin Luther King in King Community Center), welcomed me to his studio and gave me encouragement. Years later, I purchased his "mirrored bird" piece at an auction. Shortly thereafter he passed away. It has great meaning for me, and it is a piece I would be grateful to see again. It is mainly done in mirror on plexi glass with a dark grey wooden frame. It measures approx. 36"x20".

We made a police report, and the officer encouraged us to notify other artists and friends. I sent an email to friends and posted pictures on Face Book. The response from the community has been unbelievable. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to respond and forward this information along.

While it's a long shot.....I still feel that someone may see these someday, and if so, please contact me or the Bloomington Police at (812)339-4477.

My favorite bizarre bazaar is coming up this Friday and Saturday, December 4th & 5th.

Join Moe's Ache Studio at the 51st Unitarian Universalist Church Art Fair and Bazaar this Friday

from 10-7 and Saturday from 9-4. Located at Fee Lane and the Bypass, Bloomington, IN.

Featuring over 50 great artists and craftsmen, this is more than an art fair. UU always has a fab white elephant sale (where I often find the weirdest "stuff" that inspires new pieces), as well as a great selection of books, and often plants for sale.

We'll be there with new mosaics like the "Giant Java" coffee cup. If you need holiday gifts, we'll

have a nice selection of one of a kind mosaic and "upcycled" gifts under $30!

If I'm not in my booth, I will probably be in the one across the aisle, doing my own holiday shopping, socializing and noshing on the delicious homemade soups and cookies.

Like I said, it's more than an art fair. The best way to shop for the holidays! Join us!

The Deja Vu Show featuring artists who creatively reuse and recycle materials is this Saturday, November 7 at the YES Cinema, downtown Columbus, Indiana.

Our studio is filled with "works in progress" that hopefully will be progressing rapidly in the next two days, in time for the show.

Wonder Woman ornaments, made from vintage aluminum drink coasters, along with recycled wreathes and "upcycled" clocks enrobed with thrift store treasures and vintage jewelry are just a few of the pieces that will be in the booth on Saturday.

'Just finished: "Yoga Frog". Set on a "mat" of recycled glass, this whimsical frog in monkey pose is a reminder of my own neglected practice. 'Back to the mat tomorrow morning!

We're headed to Nashville, Tn this weekend for the TACA Fall Art Festival. It's been awhile since we've been to the music city, but good friends and great art show beckon our return. The Tennessee Association of Craft Artists produces a three day fair, held in Centennial Park featuring 200 artists.

Usually during our van-packing we are joined by Gita, our Siamese who thinks she should travel whenever the van doors are open. Many times we've discovered her a few miles down the road on our way to a show. Packed in the van this time (in place of Gita) will be "Feline Groovy" our latest kit and kaboodle sculpture created using recycled materials. This piece stands almost 3 feet tall and collecting all the "stuff" used in it's creation took some time. Many pieces on this work are courtesy of Martina Celerin. Martina is an exceptional artist who spends almost as many hours scouring the recycling centers as well creating beautiful dimensional weavings. We're happy she thinks of us! Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts!!

With great weather predicted, a new show layout and lots of wacky work from Moe's Ache Studio, this year's Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts is destined to be one of the best!

All artists will now be on 4th Street thanks to an addition of a new block from Dunn to Indiana. This expansion includes lots of walkways between booths, giving patrons a better opportunity to browse without the crowds. Cooler temps and great art under shady trees should further enhance the Fourth Street experience.

Moe's Ache Studio will be moving "up street" in a double booth #97-98 (closer to Dunn Street).

Look for our giant mosaic fish, "Marlon Grando" and an oversized mixed media pumpkin, currently referred to as the "Big A-- Pumpkin" and you'll know you are in the right booth!

Awesome Artist Yard Sale A Success!

Beautiful, cool August temps. and crowds of people looking for art, bargains and "stuff" made for a great sale this past Friday and Saturday. All the artists were tired, but happy to have cleared their studios and closets and put a few dollars in their pockets as a result.

Now it's back to the studio to get some pieces finished for the 34th Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts. I only hope Labor Day weekend will be as beautiful as this past one. What a crazy August!

We just returned from Krasl Art Fair in St. Joe, Michigan. With perfect weather, great crowds and a double booth to show off all the pieces we've been working on, it was a good show.

Now it's back to the studio to get ready for two of our favorite shows.

The Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts, Labor Day weekend, and Penrod the following weekend. It sounds like a long way off, but the way July has slipped by, they both will be here before I'm ready.

I'm in the process of cleaning out the studio for the first annual "Artists' Yard Sale" to take place August 21-22. I know this will be a great sale, because artists always have the best "stuff". More info to come, but be prepared for a great yard sale!

A soggy Fourth is behind us, and we're looking forward to a great weekend in Saint Joe, Michigan for the Krasl Art Fair. Set on a bluff, overlooking Lake Michigan, it's a perfect setting for an art show. Great work, cool breezes and hopefully, cooperative weather both days.

Even though we've been concentrating on making garden pieces for this show, I couldn't resist finishing up "Wired Rooster". He's actually an indoor piece. A mosaic, beaded rooster set in a chicken wire frame....more "Fowl Art".

Mirror Cat-Meerkat

I've always been intrigued by those cute, mischievous Meerkats. And while my backyard is not quite the Kalahari, it is home to my version, a mosaic, mirrored, "Mirror Cat". This guy is actually a prototype/study for a for a "Cat Clan" commission I'm starting. The WIP will be constructed of recycled materials including, PVC pipe for the body, old wooden shoe trees for the arms and a yet-to be determined head.
My goal is not only to finish 3 cats, but to document the process. 'Keep checking back!

More inspiration for new art pieces strolled across the lawn this week in the form of a young buck. Our studio really IS in the city but you'd never believe it by the wildlife we see daily. By the time I got my camera he was headed across the neighbor's lawn and down the middle of the street.

This Croc A Dial was made for our dear friend and Moe's Ache fan, Martha. We think it is a perfect fit for her collection of wacky art. Once, a wire armature, it now is covered with plaster, concrete, glass, crockery and dials from old appliances. It now resides near the White River in Indianapolis.

Not only is that the title to a new piece, it's my mantra right now. I want spring! What is up with this cold, dreary weather? I'm trying to stay optimistic and make a few fun pieces, but the view from the studio window is a little depressing. There is nothing better than spring in Bloomington and I am anxious for this year's to arrive. Now that I've finished a pair of super-sunblocking glasses, entitled "Some Like It Hot", I want an opportunity to wear them! Bring on the warm sunny days!

Tropical Paradise Show Is A Go!

It's been a wild month preparing for the Queeney Park Art Fair this weekend in Saint Louis, as well as finishing and delivering work to the Orchard Gallery in Fort Wayne for the "Tropical Paradise" show opening today. My friend, talented fiber artist, and coconspirator, Martina had this say about the show:

Bloomington artists Cappi Phillips and Martina Celerin have collaborated to create a vibrant art exhibit, “Tropical Paradise.”
The collection of works is on display at The Orchard Gallery, 6312 Covington Road, Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
The Galley is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m Monday through Saturday with extended hours to 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.
The show will be up from April 2 to 30, 2009.

“Even though our media are completely opposite, I work with hard objects, glass, stone, metal, plastics, and Martina works with soft materials, yarns, wool, cotton, fleece, we both share a whimsical side and create pieces that encourage smiles as well as tactile responses. Patrons discover the unexpected when viewing (or touching!) our work,” said Phillips, of Moe's Ache's studio. “When the gallery invited us to participate, it was the cold dreary days of December. The thought of starting on pieces for a ‘Tropical Paradise’ show seemed like such a warm, happy way to be working!” recalls Phillips.

“Cappi and I both use reclaimed and recycled materials to create our art. We’re always on a treasure hunt. As I was making the piece ‘Sangria!’ I realized that I needed plastic ice cubes to complement (and contrast with) the needle felted fruit. Of course the first and only person that I had to called was Cappi!” recalls Celerin.

Chicks with Dicks Window Is Up!

We just finished installing the window for the Bloomington Playwrights Project (BPP) upcoming production of "Chicks With Dicks II
Battle With Cannibal Sluts in Outer Space!".

“Chicks II has a much bigger cast and is literally and figuratively, ‘further out there’ than the original,” explains Richard Perez, director. “Where the original was confined to small town America, Chicks II has now broadened the gang's exploits out into outer space. I think audiences will have a blast meeting the new crew of foreign bodies found on Planet 19 in the X Solar System.”

“The instinct was to do a sequel that riffed further and farther on pulp-pop culture,” explains Trista Baldwin, playwright. “As you might guess from the title, I take on the other classic pulp genres, sci fi and horror.

In keeping with Trista's themes, I created spacy-looking chickens clad in aluminum, and horrifying hair rollers. If you get a chance, check out the window and the production this month at the BPP 107 West 9th, Bloomington, Indiana. Show times and ticket info below.

For each production, they invite an artist to create window art promoting the play. I'm intrigued by the concept of space chickens, and am eagerly awaiting the installation at the end of the month.
The chicks created especially for the play are waiting to be revealed, but in the mean time, here's a cocky guy that was finished earlier.

The Indiana State Museum TV has a name!

The Mosaic TV made especially for the 2009 Indiana State Museum Art Fair finally has a name. A big "Thank You" to Joanna Hahn and the staff at the ISM for all their help with the display and collection of tv name suggestions. The results are in and the Indiana Art Fair Signature Artist piece has a name. It was tough for this year’s artist to choose among the over 400 suggestions left by Indiana Art Fair visitors in February. Indiana Art Fair February 21-22

The time has almost arrived. The Indiana Art Fair is right round the corner! And with that, the Signature Artist piece has been revealed and will be on display in the Indianapolis museum’s Frank O’Bannon Great Hall leading up to the event. Though plans for the event are pretty much finalized there is one last point of business – there is not title for the Signature Artist piece!
Here is your chance to get involved with a real piece of art. We are looking for a title for this year’s 2009 Indiana Art Fair Signature Piece by Bloomington, Indiana artist Cappi Phillips. To contribute, visit the Indiana Art Fair on Feb. 21 or 22 and visit Cappi’s booth (#1) to get an up close view of the piece and leave your title suggestions. Moe's Ache Studio is honored to be able to create this year's signature piece for the Indiana Art Fair. Why a television you may ask? As a resident of Bloomington, Indiana which was once home to RCA whose televisions are featured in the museum’s collection the idea of a mosaic tv seemed like a perfect fit. We created glass tiles depicting iconic television programming. These tiles were incorporated with cut glass mosaic pieces and applied to a vintage television set that at one time was in the museum collection. Although the television is no longer receiving a signal, we hope it's still capable of transmitting signals and memories you'll find entertaining.

Every year when January's gloomy days and cold temps seem to sap my energy, I always vow to use the time productively in the studio, cleaning, organizing and creating. This year, as I'm recovering from a bad case of pneumonia I realize that another January has come and gone, but at least I have a good excuse for not getting tasks accomplished. My energy level has been at an all time low, but is on the rise and I'm excited about finishing up some commissions and beginning on new pieces for the Indiana State Museum show coming up February 21-22.

It's been a busy but inspired summer at Moe's Ache Studio. After finishing a commission for 2 pairs of mosaic window shutters, it was then time to start working on pieces for the upcoming 4th Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts and Penrod Art Fair. Both are great shows, and I never feel like I have enough pieces ready.

Following the outdoor show season is the "Creature Feature" show at Gallery North on the Square here in Bloomington. This will be a collaborative show with Susie Seligman featuring, you guessed it, mosaic and mixed media creatures.

The first piece finished for the show is the Coy Koi a glass and tile mosaic piece designed for indoors or out.

Summer story

It's been awhile since the last post, but a short update of the summer includes attending 3 juried art shows in June.

The Saint Louis "Art and Air" proved to be a beautiful show with high-quality arts and crafts, but plagued by thunderstorms and steamy heat.

Our favorite show, Talbot Street in Indianapolis, IN was a perfect weekend with huge crowds and good sales on Saturday. Our Pooch Porto Pottie was a hit, and we've started working on two commissions based on the first design.

Art Fair on the Square here in Bloomington, IN was another show threatened by rain, but with the help of family, we were packed up and away before the rain hit. It's always nice doing a show at home, and we look forward to seeing friends and neighbors at the Fourth Street Festival of the Arts and Crafts Labor day weekend (August 30-31)

Currently I'm working on 4 window shutters for a fellow artist who has been waiting patiently to add some "mosaic zing" to the front of her house. My first completed piece of the new year is a commision "BJ's Luv Bug", to be delivered on Tuesday.
The next focus will be on work using primarily in red for the Gallery North "Red Hot Show" opening in February in Bloomington Indiana.
